IES Juníper Serra, Palma de Mallorca(Spain)

The IES Juníper Serra is a comprehensive Secondary Education school with more than 1.200 students and 125 teachers. It is the biggest secondary school in the Balearics and is located in the outskirts of Palma de Mallorca.

 

At the IES Juníper Serra, the following levels are offered:

·        Compulsory Secondary Education      
(students aged 12 to 16)

·        Upper Secondary Education
(students aged 16 to 18)

·        Basic vocational training
(students aged 16)

·        Intermediate vocational training
(students aged 16 to 18)

·        Upper vocational training
(students aged 18 onwards)

The school year begins in mid-September and ends in mid-June. It is divided in three terms delimited by the Christmas and Easter holidays.

The school was founded in 1966 as a Hotel and Restaurant vocational centre. At that time, it was the only school in the Balearic Islands aimed improving the skills of young people who wanted to initiate a professional life in those fields. The school was located in the centre of Palma.

 In 1986 the school moved to its current location outside Palma and started to offer courses in 4 different fields:  

ü      Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism

ü      Photography, video and television

ü      Car mechanics / iron work and car painting

ü      Business and Administration

  IES Juníper Serra took an active role as a pilot centre in the deep reform of the Spanish Educational system which took place in the early ‘90. Once the new Spanish education law was enacted, IES Juníper Serra began offering compulsory secondary education as well as upper secondary education (Bachillerato).
